There are two popular Luigis in American culture: the cartoon plumber from the franchise, and Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. 🤷♂️
Charlie Day, who voices the former Luigi, also considers himself a fan of the latter.
During a press event in Tokyo for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is now playing in theaters, longtime It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia scene-stealer Charlie Day — who voices Luigi in the franchise — was asked by an interviewer on the Tintoria Podcast who his “favorite Luigi in recent American history?” 🤔
Day, who was clearly and expertly teed up to give a specific answer, repeated the question back while he processed the joke.
🗣️ - “In recent American history?!” — before answering: “Well, me, first of all, number one. Uh, Luigi Mangione… number two.”
Co-star Keegan-Michael Key immediately burst into laughter at the question, while Anya Taylor-Joy buried her face in her palm. 🤦♂️
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is absolutely crushing it at the box office as it opened to $34 million on its first day in theaters and is projected to make around $350 million globally this weekend. 💰
