The 2026 LA Marathon ended in one of the closest finishes the race has ever seen.

Kenyan runner Michael Kimani Kamau had been leading late in the race and looked on track to win, but near the finish he briefly followed the lead motorcycle off the course before correcting himself and getting back on track.

That moment opened the door for Nathan Martin (@nim_i_am), a 36 year old high school track and cross country coach from Michigan, who had been chasing him down over the final miles.

With about 800 meters left, Martin began his sprint and slowly closed the gap. In the final meters, he surged past Kamau right at the tape.

Martin crossed the finish line in 2:11:17, winning the race by just 0.01 seconds in a dramatic photo finish.

The victory also made Martin the first African American runner to win the LA Marathon in the race’s 41 year history.
