Justin Bieber headlined weekend #1 of Coachella, and 13 songs into his 90 minute set he pulled out a MacBook and began playing clips from his early career. He sung along to YouTube clips of music videos and past performances while he and his fans watched the young Biebs on the big screen, while the Old Biebs performed. I think this was AWESOME. If there’s one dude who it makes sense for a full circle performance of his younger self and older self, it’s Justin Bieber. I don’t think a creative, minimalistic stage concept like this means he didn’t put in any effort. There are very few acts who are popular enough with a big enough catalog where they don’t need all the bells and whistles, and Biebs is one of them. There’s also nobody who has quite the career arc, with ups and downs and childhood vs adulthood where this idea feels more like a full circle metaphor. Other acts this might come across as lazy, but not Bieber. There’s other critiques like he played too much new music and songs ppl didn’t know etc. That’s a different discussion. But criticizing this concept is crazy to me. I think it’s 🔥🔥🔥 and would be willing to bet the vast majority of hate is coming from diehard Stans of other pop acts who feel the need to compete and tear down other pop stars to prop up their personal favorite
