Elon Musk looked advertisers in the eye at the DealBook Summit and told them exactly where to go. After major brands paused spending on X following controversy over content moderation, Musk didn't soften his response or issue a careful statement. He said what he thought — directly, on stage, in front of cameras — and made clear he wasn't interested in being held hostage by ad dollars. It was either the most reckless thing a platform owner could say or the most honest. Possibly both. The business risk was real. Ad revenue funds the platform. But Musk's position was simple — a business that shapes its product around advertiser approval isn't really independent. And independence, for better or worse, is the whole point of what he's trying to build. Whether the strategy works long term is still being decided.
