Bay Area filmmaker Autumn Durald Arkapaw just made Oscars history.
The Danville-raised cinematographer won Best Cinematography for Sinners, becoming the first woman and first woman of color ever to win the award in the Academy’s 98-year history.
Arkapaw was born in Oxnard and raised in the Bay Area. She is Filipino on her mother’s side and Black Creole on her father’s, making her historic win a major milestone for representation behind the camera.
She also became the first woman to shoot a feature film using large-format IMAX, one of the most technically demanding formats in filmmaking.
By the way, we have a weekly newsletter with what’s worth knowing about and doing in San Francisco. One newsletter. Once a week. Link in bio.
