There’s nothing to lift your spirit like a hand from Uncle Sam.
Speaking with CNBC this morning, President Trump remarked that he'd "love somebody to buy Spirit,” adding that “maybe” the federal government should help out the ailing airline. It’s stock price more than doubled during trading following the presidential sound byte.
After filing for bankruptcy twice in the past two years, Spirit sold off planes and focused on fewer routes to cut costs. Recently though, the airline has considered offering the government a stake in exchange for assistance as it faces the prospect of liquidating its assets. To make matters worse, the past month has seen Spirit hit with rising fuel prices amid the Iran war.
While the president was clearly open to a Spirit acquisition, he shot down any support for a rumored American and United merger, saying such corporate marriages make companies “lazy.” United CEO Scott Kirby reportedly pitched Trump on the idea of his company buying American recently—which would have created a behemoth airline controlling 40% of the US flight market.
