Lots of American car buffs fall in love with Japan’s pint-size minicars. They’re clever, cute, cost-conscious and — much to devotees’ dismay — all but unattainable in the U.S. After President Donald Trump’s October summit trip to Japan, he became so smitten with the economical kei jidosha, Japanese for “light vehicle,” that he signed an executive order encouraging them to be built and sold in the U.S., partly to counter car affordability concerns. But take it from me, an American living in Japan for two decades and surrounded on a daily basis by these toaster ovens on wheels: You don’t want a kei car, nor should you. Here are the top reasons bringing these most Japanese of Japanese cars to American roads is doomed to flop. From their size and power to the business case, they just won’t fit in. #japan #automotive #autoindustry
