Golden Tempo won the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby as a longshot winner, making Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer to claim a Derby victory.
“He was so far out of it,” DeVaux said. “I’m glad that I can be a representative of all women everywhere. That we can do anything we set our minds to.”
The No. 19 horse closed strongly down the final straight to get the win. Morning-line favorite Renegade was second and Ocelli, an also-eligible horse that got into the field during the week, was third.
Golden Tempo had 23-to-1 odds at post time.
