BTS and their Army are back
Arguably the most successful boy band returns for its comeback tour after being gone for 4 years as a group due to mandatory military service for each member. BTS had one of the biggest runs that elevated the K-pop genre into a global sensation. In 2016, they sold out 4 US arena concerts; in 2018, they became the first K-pop band with a No. 1 album on the Billboard charts; and they were the fastest group ever to reach 1 million followers on TikTok.
But the landscape has changed since then. Successes from the likes of Stray Kids, NewJeans, BLACKPINK, Le Sserafim, and ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ have made the genre much more competitive.
Can BTS pick up where they left off or did their absence leave a vacuum that only one mega superstar group could fill?
