It would have been the perfect ending to John Cena’s legendary career.
For over 20 years, he has been the face that ran WWE, and for very good reason. Living by his motto, “hustle, loyalty, and respect,” Cena stood for what is right, earning the admiration of countless fans worldwide.
But, just like in any story, a great hero needs a perfect villain.
Ever since the first successful cash-in of the Money in the Bank contract at New Year’s Revolution in 2006, Edge has been the best rival for Cena.
If Cena was, in his words, “goody-two-shoes Superman,” Edge is “The Rated R Superstar.”
Edge stood for everything John Cena was not. From the looks, attitude, and even entrance music, their contrasting styles were the perfect storm that led to their classic battles in 2006, earning “Feud of the Year” honors from Pro Wrestling Illustrated. Fans often point to that period that saw Cena and Edge’s careers soar to even greater heights.
When Edge made his successful in-ring return at the 2020 Royal Rumble, observers had speculated that it would probably lead to another feud with Cena.
Except it didn’t.
For some reason, Edge did not even have a match against Cena throughout his WWE run from 2020 to 2023.
The final dream match felt further away when Edge made the jump to All Elite Wrestling in October 2023.
Despite being in separate promotions in 2025, Cena and Edge, now competing in AEW under his given name, Adam Copeland, have paid tribute to each other’s Hall of Fame careers by performing their rival’s signature moves in matches.
Fans went crazy when Cena did the spear, and Copeland hit the five knuckle shuffle and Attitude Adjustment in their respective matches. Supporters of both men have dreamed that perhaps they can meet each other in the same ring once again.
Numerous reports, however, have stated that Copeland’s contract with AEW runs until October 2026.
John Cena vs. Edge.
ONE LAST TIME.
But it wasn’t meant to be 🤷♂️
