He added that Laporta even began negotiating a contract with Messi’s father and that La Liga had already given the green light for the deal. However, according to Xavi, the president suddenly backed out. “Laporta told me that if Leo came back there would be a wage war and the club couldn’t afford that. Then Leo stopped answering because they told him the move couldn’t happen.” Xavi insists the real reason Messi never returned is simple. “Messi will never return to Barcelona because Laporta doesn’t want it. It’s not because of La Liga or money demands from Jorge Messi. That’s not true.”
