Oakland and Richmond native Ryan Coogler just won his first Academy Award, taking home Best Original Screenplay for Sinners.
The Bay Area filmmaker grew up in Oakland and Richmond, went to Saint Mary’s College High School in Albany, and started his career telling a local story with Fruitvale Station before going on to direct Creed, Black Panther, and now the Oscar-winning Sinners.
