San Francisco has lost one of its own.

Eric Dane, the SF-born actor best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, has died at 53 from ALS.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane grew up in the Bay Area and attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City and San Mateo High School, where he graduated. A former varsity water polo player, he discovered acting after appearing in a school production of All My Sons.

After early TV roles in the 1990s, Dane became a household name as “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy from 2006 to 2012, returning again in 2021.

He went on to star in The Last Ship, HBO’s Euphoria, and most recently appeared in Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

His career spanned more than three decades across television and film.
Sending love to his family, friends, and fans in the Bay and beyond.

Rest in peace.
