The reason was due to La Liga having ‘non-EU player’ limits and therefore Messi was registered as a Spanish player because of his dual citizenship.
The name ‘Luis Leonardo’ came from administrative/name-format technicalities in his paperwork and not a real alias.
It really caught us off guard, but just imagine Leo actually chose Spain… how many World Cups would he have won? 🤔
