A month of labor for a sculpture that lasted days ❤️
At the Sapporo Snow Festival, the 11th Brigade of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force spent nearly a month shaping 3,175 tonnes of snow into the largest Star Wars snow sculpture on record. Vader stood at the center, backed by stormtroopers, a TIE fighter, and the Death Star.
What gives it real weight is who built it. This wasn’t a movie set dropped into town for a photo op. It came out of a city festival that has leaned on the Self-Defense Forces for giant snow builds since the 1950s, so the spectacle carried discipline and local tradition with the fandom.
That’s why the image still holds up. For a few winter days, blockbuster mythology became part of the street itself.
