In 2023, New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson invited his former high school coach to move in with him after the coach's wife died, repaying years of mentorship with an act of quiet generosity. The coach, Butch Stockton, had guided Robinson at Chalmette High School in Louisiana, helping shape him into a McDonald's All-American before he jumped straight to the NBA.
The bond extended to Stockton's wife, Dawn. When she was hospitalized with metastatic cancer, Robinson visited her nearly every day, growing close to the couple. After she died in September 2023 at age 70, following 31 years of marriage, Robinson approached his old coach at the funeral with an offer. "He said, 'Coach, there's no reason to stay down here in Louisiana. You come to New York with me and enjoy yourself and get your mind back straight,'" Stockton recalled on an MSG Network broadcast.
Stockton took him up on it and moved into Robinson's New York home. "It works out for the best," Robinson said. "I help him out, he helped me." The center also mourned Dawn publicly on Instagram, writing that she had "been too good to me" and asking her to keep watching over him.
