MPs have backed a move to release documents relating to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment as a UK trade envoy.
The government supported a Lib Dem “humble address” motion compelling ministers to publish files from his 2001 appointment. Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant told the Commons the government would comply “as fast as we possibly can”, although he warned a live police investigation could cause delays. The motion passed unopposed.
Andrew, who served as special representative for international trade and investment from 2001 to 2011, was released under investigation last week after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He has previously denied any wrongdoing in relation to Jeffrey Epstein and has not responded to specific allegations following the recent release of US documents. Police searches at his former Royal Lodge residence have now concluded.
Speaking in the Commons, Sir Chris said colleagues described a “pattern” of behaviour, calling Andrew “a rude, arrogant and entitled man who could not distinguish between the public interest… and his own private interest”. Any further inquiry by MPs is expected to wait until legal proceedings have concluded.
