His first day of church….. and this is what I’ll teach him about it.

Thinking about what I hope to teach him about faith, God, and the role church will play in his life.

I’ll teach you that you don’t need a church building to believe in God. You’ll find him everywhere. But church is one of the places I go to show God I’m willing to serve His children.

I’ll teach you that church isn’t about what you get from it—it’s about what you give to it.

Salvation doesn’t come from sitting in a pew. Faith is shown through action. Through service. Through sacrifice. Through how you treat the people around you.

I’ll teach you not to attend church because of the people there, and not to leave because of them either. People are imperfect. God is not. Go where the Spirit is felt. Stay where you are called to serve.

You’ll be judged by believers and non-believers alike. Don’t build your life around their opinions. Build it around what you know is right in your heart.

I’ll teach you to have faith that stands on its own. Faith independent of your friends. Independent of your leaders. INDEPENDENT OF EVEN ME, your father. Because true faith must be your own.

I’ll teach you that true spirituality is service. That the strongest people I know, spiritual giants, are the ones who quietly lift the burdens of others.

You’ll find God in church sometimes. You’ll find Him outside of church many times. Seek Him in all things. In your work. In your family. In nature. In hardship. In gratitude. In service.

Church was never meant to be about what you can get from it. Maybe it’s about what you can give to it.

Most of all, I’ll teach you to seek the TRUST of God more than the APPROVAL of people. Do what is right whether you’re praised for it or criticized for it. Stand for truth even when you stand alone. Seek TRUST OVER LOVE. TRUST OVER BEING LIKED. God loves everyone, but he only trust a few…. Be the man he TRUST.

And no matter where life takes you—whether you’re in a church, a boardroom, a classroom, or a bar—be the spiritual leader that place needs.

That’s what I’ll teach my son. Stand on your faith, even if you stand alone, and I promise you it’ll pay off.
