Pubs are getting a late licence upgrade for the World Cup 🍻
Football fans backing England or Scotland this summer can keep the pints flowing a bit longer, after the government confirmed pubs in England and Wales can extend their opening hours during key World Cup knockout matches.
The update means venues can stay open until 1am for games kicking off between 5pm and 9pm, and as late as 2am for matches starting between 9pm and 10pm. It’s a small tweak to earlier plans, now covering certain early evening knockout fixtures if either side tops their group.
Industry figures have welcomed the move, saying it’ll boost trade and bring fans together, while the Home Secretary added it gives pubs an “open goal” to serve supporters long after the final whistle. With the tournament taking place across the US, Canada and Mexico, time zones were always going to make things interesting.
