Shaquille O’Neal left LSU in 1992 as the number one pick in the NBA Draft after promising his mother he would finish his education. On Saturday, he walked across the stage at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge and collected his fifth degree, a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts.
His thesis was titled “Interdisciplinary Approach to Mentorship through the lens of the epic poem The Odyssey,” focused on strengthening mentorship for athletes. This is now his second master’s, adding to a bachelor’s from LSU, an MBA from the University of Phoenix and a Doctorate in Education from Barry University. When his name was called, the announcer introduced him as “Shaquille ‘I Hate Charles Barkley’ O’Neal.”
Four NBA championships, 15 All-Star selections, a Hall of Fame induction and five degrees. A promise kept.
